Set in California during the 1870s, Lancer was the story
of the struggles of a landowner against locals who were
trying to take over his property by force. Old Murdoch Lancer
was no longer able to defend his cattle and sheep ranch in the
San Joaquin Valley by himself, and even trying to run it with
only the help of his attractive young ward, Teresa, had become
difficult. At his behest his two sons came to the ranch to help
their father. The half brothers had never met each other and
had qidely divergent backgrounds. Johnny was a drifter/
gunfighter who had spent most of his life wandering around the
border towns of the Southwest. Scott was a sophisticated
college graduate who had been living in Boston. Despite their
differences, they learned to respect each other and help
their father manage his vast real estate holdings. Jelly
Hoskins, a crochety old ranch hand, became a regular member
of the cast for the second season. Yet another Lancer,
hillbilly Chad, was introduced in the spring of 1970 in
anticipation of a third season, which did not materialize.
